Density functional calculations of nuclear magnetic shieldings using the zeroth-order regular approximation „ZORA... for relativistic effects: ZORA nuclear magnetic resonance

چکیده
We present a new relativistic formulation for the calculation of nuclear magnetic resonance ~NMR! shielding tensors. The formulation makes use of gauge-including atomic orbitals and is based on density functional theory. The relativistic effects are included by making use of the zeroth-order regular approximation. This formulation has been implemented and the Hg NMR shifts of HgMe2 , HgMeCN, Hg~CN!2 , HgMeCl, HgMeBr, HgMeI, HgCl2 , HgBr2 , and HgI2 have been calculated using both experimental and optimized geometries. For experimental geometries, good qualitative agreement with experiment is obtained. Quantitatively, the calculated results deviate from experiment on average by 163 ppm, which is approximately 3% of the range of Hg NMR. The experimental effects of an electron donating solvent on the mercury shifts have been reproduced with calculations on HgCl2~NH3!2, HgBr2~NH3!2, and HgI2~NH3!2 . In addition, it is shown that the mercury NMR shieldings are sensitive to geometry with changes for HgCl2 of approximately 50 ppm for each 0.01 Å change in bond length, and 100 ppm for each 10° change in bond angle. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~99!30313-5#

Density functional calculations of nuclear quadrupole coupling constants in the zero-order regular approximation for relativistic effects
The zeroth-order regular approximation ~ZORA! is used for the evaluation of the electric field gradient, and hence nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, in some closed shell molecules. It is shown that for valence orbitals the ZORA-4 electron density, which includes a small component density ~‘‘picture-change correction’’!, very accurately agrees with the Dirac electron density. For hydrogen-l...
متن کاملInsight into the structure of silver cyanide from (13)C and (15)N solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
The structure of silver cyanide has been investigated by solid-state multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 NMR spectra of magic-angle-spinning (MAS) and stationary powder samples of isotopically enriched Ag(13)CN, Ag(13)C(15)N, and AgC(15)N have been acquired at the external applied magnetic field strengths 4.7, 7.05, and 9.4 T. Axially symmetric carbon and nit...
متن کاملRelativistic nuclear magnetic resonance J-coupling with ultrasoft pseudopotentials and the zeroth-order regular approximation.
We present a method for the first-principles calculation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) J-coupling in extended systems using state-of-the-art ultrasoft pseudopotentials and including scalar-relativistic effects. The use of ultrasoft pseudopotentials is allowed by extending the projector augmented wave (PAW) method of Joyce et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 127, 204107 (2007)]. We benchmark it against...
متن کاملA gauge-independent zeroth-order regular approximation to the exact relativistic Hamiltonian--formulation and applications.
A simple modification of the zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) in relativistic theory is suggested to suppress its erroneous gauge dependence to a high level of approximation. The method, coined gauge-independent ZORA (ZORA-GI), can be easily installed in any existing nonrelativistic quantum chemical package by programming simple one-electron matrix elements for the quasirelativistic Ha...
متن کاملOptimizing the Structure of Tetracyanoplatinate (II): A Comparison of Relativistic Density Functional Theory Methods
The geometry of tetracyanoplatinate(II) (TCP) has been optimized with density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to compare different computational strategies. Two approximate scalar relativistic methods, i.e. the scalar zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) and non-relativistic calculations with relativistic effective core potentials (ECPs), were benchmarked against the four-com...
